This is a medium-bodied wine with lovely balance and structure. The sweet fruit, mocha, mint and spice flavours work in well with the new vanillin oak characteristics. The wine has good length of flavour finishing with pleasant, dusty and slightly grippy tannins which will soften over time.
Kiola2005 Shiraz(Boorowa, Hilltops Region, NSW) Here's a little-known winery with a standout wine. Unusual cool climate spice is evident here playing alongside the standout blackberry fruit flavours. Think menthol and dark chocolate. Wonderful. Quality 4 Value 4 Price $19

This enjoyable, food friendly Shiraz comes for the Kiola Vineyard of viticulturalist Marks Sims and his wife Luisa. It is bright crimson and has sappy scents. Juicy, ripe blood plum flavour shows on the front palate and black pepper and cherry fruit characters integrate with coconuty oak on the middle palate. Minty tannins feature at the finish. It can be mail-ordered on 0428 362 486 or wine@kiolavineyard.com.au and would be good with pork and veal rissoles, tandoori lamb kebabs or pepper steak.
The Kiola Vineyard is near Boorowa in the Hilltops region and is on the farming property owned by Luisa Sim’s parents, Ian and Bev Curlewis.

Is the understated nose symbolised by the budgie on the label? Actually it’s a superb parrot so Alan Jones would love it and the 13 per cent will be welcomed by the barbecuers.
